The Dangers of Radon

Radon is a radioactive gas that activates cancer cells in your lungs. You may have a problem in your home and not even know it; Radon is odorless, tasteless and cannot be seen. According to the Surgeon General, in the United States, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer with as many as 20,000 deaths per year due to Radon. Children and animals, as shown in some studies, are more sensitive to the effects of Radon Gas. This is due to a high respiratory rate and a rapid rate of dividing cells as they grow.

Is Radon Real?

Radon is an odor-less radioactive gas which comes from the natural breakdown of uranium. This deadly gas is typically found in igneous rock and soil. In some cases, well water is capable of creating the perfect environment for Radon gas to build up.

Health Risks

Most scientists agree that the risk of death from Radon at 4 pCi/l is approximately 1 in 100. At the 4 pCi/l EPA action guideline level, Radon carries approximately 1000 times the risk of death as any other EPA carcinogen.

Respiratory Concerns

Most exposure to Radon occurs through inhalation and ingestion. Atmospheric releases of Radon results in the formation of decay from very small broken down heavy metals such as lead. These small particles rapidly attach to other airborne materials such as dust, which reach your lungs at astonishing speeds. Just imagine tiny little “explosions” at millions mph, breaking down the red blood cells in your lungs and activating cancer cells.

How Radon Gets Into Your Home

Radon gas produced by raw material in the soil or rock enters buildings through cracks in floors, walls, sump-pits and other sources. Radon is a heavy gas, therefore levels are typically highest in the basement or crawl space. People who spend time in rooms located in the basement of their homes or at work have a greater risk of exposure.

The Process

Anytime you make a big decision, you want to know you are making the RIGHT one. Radon Mitigation is an important decision. All of us at Affordable Radon are here to help you in this process. We strive to ensure your experience with us exceeds your expectations of satisfaction. If you are not satisfied, neither are we! Before we visit your home, you should have a basic understanding of what is going to take place. Here is how we work…

Getting Started

What is the first thing you do? Exactly what you are doing… RESEARCH! After your research is complete, simply call our office to speak with one of our friendly and professional representatives who will assist you in receiving a “No Obligation” quote. The following information will be needed; Radon level, year of home, finished or unfinished basement and the square footage of basement. We will also need the square footage of any crawl-space or sub-floor. Having this information ready will make the quote process more efficient, with less hassle.

Onsite Estimate

Will we come to your home before you make your decision? Yes, We will review all options available to you. This gives you the opportunity to meet one of our experts, who will review all options that are available to you. We are confident once you meet us, you will not want to go anywhere else.

What We Do

Once you make your decision to book with us, one of our expert technicians will show up “On-Time”, ready to work! With an on-site estimate already complete, we know where to go, what to expect and what to do! It’s also OK to book “without” an on-site estimate. Our technicians will review options and immediately get to work once a decision is made. We always try to work through window wells, outside, or in the garage whenever possible. Our technicians are seldom seen or heard!

Starting from the basement, we run 4″ PVC pipe from a 5″ whole cored from the basement floor. We remove an average of 15 to 20 gallons of dirt, creating a “void”. This gives us the negative pressure required to extract Radon Gas. The final steps include pipe fitting and clean-up.

External Installation

As stated earlier, we always attempt to enclose the system within the house and attic. When this is not possible, or if you decide on an outside installation, we will help you choose the best location. We take the following into consideration; city code, aesthetics, electrical capability and more. Our Technicians have seen all the “wrong ways” and know all the “right ways” to install a system. We take pride in the knowledge and professionalism of our technicians. They will give you their best advice to take into consideration. Pictures are also available. Just ask and they will show you!

In House Installation

There are benefits to installing an enclosed system in the inside of your home. These benefits include sustaining the life of the system by keeping it out of the elements such as extreme heat cold rain and snow. This will help the fan last several years longer. Having an enclosed system in the inside of the home is also more aesthetically pleasing.
